After the 1879 edition prepared by Orson Pratt, the next major English edition of the Book of Mormon appeared in 1920. It was produced by a committee of apostles, chaired by George F. Richards, that included Anthony W. Ivins, Joseph Fielding Smith, James E. Talmage, and Melvin J. Ballard. The combined gospel scholarship of these men resulted in an edition of the Book of Mormon that made scripture study simpler and more effective.
