An Exhibition of the Evidence that an ancient population peopled America many centuries before its Discovery, and Inquiries into their Origin, das 1833 in Albany (New York) erschien, drei Jahre nach dem Erscheinen des Book of Mormon, mit dem es sich inhaltlich mehrfach berührt.

===

The content of the book is determined by an idea that has fundamental importance for the new religion. The revelations of the Old and New Testaments were given to the peoples of the ancient world and from here spread across the earth. But was the assumption justified, was it consistent with the teaching of God's love and grace that he completely neglected the vast continent of the western hemisphere, leaving its inhabitants without any knowledge of his commandments and the remedies he gave to people, and so, without through my own fault, mercilessly consigned me to eternal destruction? The fact that the original inhabitants of America descended from Noah and must have come from the Old World after the Babylonian language confusion was clear from the Bible and was beyond doubt for the believer. The idea that they were connected to the "lost" tribes of Israel, whose traces were sought everywhere on earth, was also extremely obvious: for the narrow perspective of a simple person who believed in the inspiration of the Bible was that handed down in the Old Testament History of Israel the history of the world. So this idea has arisen often enough, since the 17th century 1); Evidence of this was found in the religious rites and traditions, the tribal constitution, the language, the customs of the Indians, in the mounds and graves of the new world, just superficially enough to convince a naive, uneducated mind, as these fantasies are known to be in still recur in the present and find their audience.

1) Evidence from Riley p. 123 ff. He refers in particular to a work by Ethan Smith, View of the Hebrews or the Tribes of Israel in America, published in Vermont in 1825, and also to a book by Priest, American Antiquities. An Exhibition of the Evidence that an ancient population peopled America many centuries before its Discovery, and Inquiries into their Origin, which was published in Albany (New York) in 1833, three years after the publication of the Book of Mormon, with which its contents are related several times .

––––

In the forests of western New York, which had so recently been the scene of bitter fighting with the Indians, there were enough remnants and traditions to vividly occupy the young Smith's imagination; he always pursued these things and collected new discoveries of real and forged documents with interest and discussed them in his own style. Combined with these ideas in his mind was the desire for reliable and unchallengeable divine instructions in the dispute between human opinions and sects.

This is the root of the “Book of Mormon.” The history of the ancient tribes of America, which his imagination invents and shapes, the Jaredites, who were led to America in wonderful ships after the confusion of languages (Book of Ether), and later that of the descendants of Lehi (Nephi I. II etc.), the emigrated from Jerusalem under Zedekiah and from whom the Lamanites [the Indians] and the orthodox Nephites descended, to whom Christ appeared after his death (III Nephi) and who were then later wiped out, but whose holy writings were recorded and included by Mormon and his son Moroni buried together in the sacred stones, these stories, together with all the revelations contained in them, are at the same time the divine instruction for the new race of English colonists in America, who have hitherto been through the strife of the sects, which has arisen from the uncertainty of the interpretation of the older ones Revelations had grown up, were left in complete uncertainty and confusion. A Bible for America, in absolute conformity with the Old and New Testaments, but at the same time an explanation and fulfillment of its teachings, restoring the original purity of revelation or gospel, is the idea which runs through the whole Book of Mormon and in which it takes root.
