"Fifty Years Ago Today," Salt Lake Tribune, May 31, 1897, 1
Green Flake was of the original pioneers of Utah. He is a colored man, born in the State of Mississippi, and is still alive, being a respected citizen of John Grey's Lake, Bingham County, Ida. The date of his birth is not recorded, but he is said to be over 75 years of age. He had been a slave all his life, but joining the Mormon church, he became a valued man in the pioneer company traveling in the fourteenth ten, of which Joseph Matthews was captain.
