Poor General Markle!

We do not wonder that some of the friends of the Westmoreland General should feel suspicious of the cavalier treatment of their favorite by the Clay Whigs. Clayism is now the grand whig monopoly; and there is neither time nor room to attend to Markle.

We agree with the Pennsylvanian that there never was such a failure as this nomination of General MARKLE. It has fallen as dead, as lifeless, as uncared-for, as the nomination of JOE SMITH, for the Presidency, by the Mormons. You meet no intelligent whig who does not respond to your enquiry after the General’s prospects with a significent shrug, or a dubious smile. Many that we have seen do not hesitate openly to declare their belief that he will be defeated; and there are numbers, even in this city, who have acted with the Whigs, who will vote for MUHLENBERG. The Westmoreland captain has not been able to stand the opening fire of the fight. He is already withdrawn almost entirely from the public eye.
