I told him that $150,000 was wholly out of the question this year, and explained somewhat to him regarding the finances of the Church. I told him I was determined, so far as I was personally concerned, to try to balance our budget, and bring our expenditures somewhere within the revenue of the Church. I told Brother West, confidently, that our expenditures for the year 1938 had been between $800,000 and $900,000 more than our revenues, stating that, however, this did not represent the actual condition, but that the matter was sufficiently alarming. I said we could not stand and ask people to live within their means and balance their budgets if we were over-running in any such way as that.
