Claims have been made that Joseph Smith's views regarding Book of Mormon lands evolved over time. It must be acknowledged that Joseph's earlier documented historical accounts had been received by revelation from the Lord. These included such accounts as the Wentworth Letter, American Revivalist Account, the Zelph Accounts, Lamanites missions, Nephite altar at Adam-ondi-Ahman and the location for the New Jerusalem, which Christ Himself declared to be on Book of Mormon lands (3 Nephi 20:22).

Each of these accounts was revealed to the Prophet. At no time did Joseph ever write or give any indication to others that he was abandoning or renouncing these earlier historically documented revelatory statements. This fact alone stands as a stark witness that his views were unflinching and immovable... he knew these things by revelation from God.

. . .

The historically documented facts indicate that no signed or attributable written account is known wherein Joseph Smith abandoned his revelatory position that the heartland of North America was the principal setting of the ancient lands of the Book of Mormon. This position is thoroughly examined and detailed in Joseph Knew; Joseph Smith and Book of Mormon Geography by this author.
