Delbert W. Curtis argues for Book of Mormon geography near the Great Lakes.
Delbert W. Curtis, Christ in North America: Christ Visited the Nephites in the Land of Promise in North America (Tigard, OR: Resource Communications, Inc., 1993), 6–12, 252–262
There is no doubt in my mind that the locations presented here are the true sites of the land where the Nephites-or the believers in Christ-whose record we have, namely the Book of Mormon, lived.
. . .
Actually, there is not a landmark or a single passage in the scriptures that would place the Nephites in Mesoamerica, not one! At the same time, all of the scriptures and landmarks place the Nephites near Lake Ontario (Sea East) and Lake Erie (Sea West), with the east border being as far east as the Catskill Mountains (3 Nephi 3:20-23) and as far west as Lake Huron (Sea North) (Helaman 3:3-4). This includes the area known as the Hill Cumorah, which thus answers the questions that have bothered men of learning for over 140 years. This explains how the gold plates got to Cumorah, and how Joseph Smith and Oliver Cowdery were able to see the records that Mormon had gathered. This also removes the need for a second Hill Cumorah.
