And on 29 April 1843 I according to Pres. Joseph Smith & Council & others, I agreed to stand by Sarah Ann Whitney as though I was supposed to be her husband & pretended marriage for the purpose of shielding them from the enemy. (She was wife of the Prophet Jos. Smith)mock ceremony of marriage before the enemy & for the purpose of bringing about the purposes of God in these last days.

I remained with Newel K. Whitney until 23 July 1843 & left Nauvoo, the City of the Saints on a Mission in the lew England States,
