In the Latin Transitus Mariae literature (recension W), Michael shows the apostles hell and those suffering eternal torments.
Traduction du Transitus latin « W », in Simon Claude Mimouni, “De l’ascension du Christ à l’assomption de la vierge à partir des Transitus Mariae: Représentations anciennes et médiévales,” in Les traditions anciennes sur la Dormition et l’Assomption de Marie: Études littéraires historiques et doctrinales (Supplements to Vigiliae Christianae 104; Leiden: Brill, 2011), 195-96
Amen.
TRANSLATION:
1. And the Lord said to them (meaning, the apostles): “It is good for you not to see it, but if you will and wish it, you will see it now”. And the Lord commanded the clouds, they took up the apostles and Mary with them. And the Lord said to Michael: “Open hell.” And it was opened immediately. And the Lord showed the apostles a place from which they could see what hell was like.
2. And they (meaning, the damned) saw the angel Michael, and they shed great tears saying: “Lord Michael, who from time immemorial has been made the prince of the angels, intercede for us.” The apostles, at these words, fell with his face to the earth. The Lord made them get up and said to them: “Remember what I said to you: 'I will lead you to the lower places where there is no light.'”
3. Then the Archangel Michael said to those who were in hell: "May the Lord live who is and remains forever and who will come to judge the living and the dead." Because incense was still being offered for humankind, the goodness of God was being refused [literally, "turned away"]. But the Lord said: “Consider, Michael, that I love humankind much more than they love me; I did not spare the outpouring of my blood and yet they were not converted."
4. And we saw again the souls who were made to suffer torments and they cried out to the blessed Mary saying: "Mary, mother of Our Lord, Mary virgin and immaculate, you who are the true light, Mary, queen blessed for eternity, pray to our Lord on our behalf that He may grant us remission from the torments we suffer.” They similarly begged the blessed Peter and John.
5. And the Lord said to those who were made to suffer torments: "Why did you not remember when I suffered for you, when I was scourged and did not protest, so that you might be forgiven and by that means have eternal life. But now, in view of your desolation--and in deference to Michael my archangel, to Mary, and to the apostles--you will have a respite of three hours."
6. After saying this, he ordered that the entire realm of hell be closed up again, immediately. And so the apostles returned to the tree of life where Isaac and Jacob were with all the saints, who had left their bodies, they rested there in the joy of the eternal kingdom.
7. The Assumption of the soul of Blessed Mary and her crowning in paradise took place on the fifteenth day of August, during the reign of the Lord Jesus. To Him the be honor from age to age. Amen.
