grove: “and I will pluck up thy groves out of the midst of thee” (3 Nephi 21:18 ~ Micah 5:14)

Here the noun *grove* refers to a sacred grove used for cultic rites. This same word is used this way throughout the Old Testament, as in Exodus 35:13: “But ye shall destroy their altars, break their images, and cut down their groves.” However, the original Hebrew in these passages refers to Asherim, that is, wooden images of the Canaanite goddess Asherah. But both the Greek Septuagint and the Latin Vulgate translated the plural Asherim as ‘groves’, interpreting them as cultic sacred groves. William Tyndale (who translated the Old Testament up through 2 Chronicles, plus the book of Jonah) and Miles Coverdale (who did the remainder of the Old Testament) both followed the secondary Greek and Latin here rather than the Hebrew, thus the word groves ends up in 3 Nephi 21:18.
