Antonio de Herrera records that baptism was practiced in the Yucatan among the Maya; baptism was performed on children between 3 and 12 years of age and would give them desire to do good.

In all the provinces of New Spain baptism has been fond in Yucatan alone, and in their tongue it means “to be born again.” They held it in such great devotion and reverence that no one failed to receive it. They thought they received in it a pure disposition to be good and not to be harmed by the demons and to attain glory, which they hoped for. It was given them between the ages of three and twelve and no one was married without it.
