In the winter of 1835 and 36, we [Rhoda Ann Fullmer and David Fullmer] first heard the gospel. The missionaries came to our home and told us that the true Gospel of Jesus Christ had been restored to the earth with all the gifts and blessings, power and authority to act in the name of God upon the earth, that existed in the days of Jesus Christ. He related the faith of Joseph Smith, who as a boy, went to the woods to inquire of the Lord which of all the churches was the true church, with perfect faith that God would answer his prayer. He could not believe that all the churches could be the right church and all teaching different doctrines. The missionaries related the whole story to us of how the boy's faith had been rewarded after he had put the words of the Apostle James to the test, which are found in the first chapter of James, 5th and 6th verses. They told us of the vision of God the father and His Son, Jesus Christ, and of the visit of the Angel Moroni and the message he delivered to Joseph Smith, about the ancient record which was buried in the Hill Cumorah, a history of an ancient people who had inhabited this continent. He left us a Book of Mormon and told us to read it and compare it with the Bible, and to put the words of Moroni to the test which are found in the 10th chapter and 4th verse of the Book of Mormon in the back of the book Jesus said, "My sheep know my voice." We began to search the scripture, and to read the Book of Mormon and we put the words of Moroni to the test, "And when ye shall receive these things I would exhort you to ask God the Eternal Father in the name of Jesus Christ if these things are not true, and if ye shall ask with a sincere heart, with real intent, having faith in Christ, He will manifest the truth of it unto you, by the power of the Holy Ghost." We did as directed in the above verse and found them to be true, for the truth of the book and the restored gospel manifested to us by the power of the Holy Ghost. I believed it from the first I heard it and was baptized in July 1836. In September, '36, my husband was baptized. We rejoiced greatly in the truth.
