but here's some language from uh his mother who said that uh Hiram who's uh

Joseph & Hyrum’s relationship

42:00

had a remarkable tenancy and sympathy for Joseph Smith that he might he spent hours with Joseph Smith

42:07

um attending to him through the leg issues and and the pain that he was caused you know all her words are almost

42:13

day and night and then um at the bottom is a quote from the

42:19

Behrens article and I'll just quote it it's short it says Hiram would remain home for a year to attend homebound

42:26

Joseph who um remained on crutches for most of four years to be tutored by Hiram so that's

42:34

where this information conveys and it only is conveyed and this only makes sense

42:39

yeah absolutely yeah so I want to add a little bit more about Dr John Smith he

Dr. John Smith’s life & influence

42:45

passed away in 1809 and I want to just go through his credentials because he's really a remarkable guy and I'm I'm kind

42:51

of a fan of him at this point and uh but he was a dartmouth's first Professor he

42:57

um had a master in ancient languages theology philosophy uh and uh Newton

43:04

science he was on the Board of Trustees he was the pastor of the White Chapel the Church of Christ he was the

43:10

Dartmouth College Bookstore proprietor um College librarian that's where hiring

43:16

Smith could have checked out innumerable books to take home and and study from himself and perhaps uh speculatively

43:24

even loan to to Joseph Smith uh he developed the curriculum with John

43:29

Wheelock now pay attention to this he was proficient in this is a bright guy

43:35

greek latin Hebrew Chaldaic Syriac Assyria Arabic and cop Coptic uh yeah

43:43

sounds like sounds like David bakavoy a little intelligence I I don't know but it's certainly more than mine because I

43:49

struggle with English but uh and and keep track of that because it's going to come from a second come up again in a

43:55

second he was the chaplain of the Hanover Masonic Lodge masonry was a big

44:01

deal in fact that Lodge in Hanover and Hanover and Dartmouth are basically synonymous Hanover is Dartmouth and and

44:10

uh and vice versa um with a little exaggeration there I was

44:15

established in 1796 again before Joseph Smith was even born he died before his

44:22

lectures could be published he had every intention of publishing the theological lectures that I had transcribed he's uh

44:30

even to this day considered a highly respected intellectual and he was and

44:36

and going back to what we discussed Joseph Smith seniors parents first cousin that's the that's the actual

44:44

relationship and I'm sure the family was super proud of him right I mean how could they not be well exactly in fact

44:49

some of the things I've read said that suggested that the reason why Hiram got in to Dartmouth was because of that

44:55

family relationship yeah that would make sense yeah yeah so I was mentioning this to rfm and he he brought this and this

45:02

is a bit of a tangent but it brings up again this point that there's a story about

45:08

um uh who was it Martin Harris going off to Professor Anton to go over the

45:14

characters from the gold plates and something that never made sense to rfm and now that he brings it up it doesn't

45:20

make sense to me either and I'm just quoting here it says and this is Martin Harris uh yeah this is in the Pearl of Great

45:27

Price Joseph Smith history uh section 163-65. yes thank you

45:35

um that he showed Professor Anton um these characters which were Egyptian

45:42

uh I can't read it from this I'll read it Egyptian calderic Assyria and Arabic

Dartmouth Themes that end up in Mormon Doctrine

45:48

and he said they were true characters well this begs the question why on Earth

45:54

is Martin Harris talking about these other languages these weren't on the gold plates these other Arabic what is

46:01

that why is that list and why is that list suspiciously close to the languages

46:06

Mastered by Joseph Smith's relative Dr John Smith so just an interesting

46:14

question why is this even here in the first place number one and number two

46:20

um uh why is it virtually identical to the list of Dr John Smith interesting yeah

46:27

okay okay so uh to get into Dartmouth College I I really have a this again a

46:34

personal belief I think Hiram Smith was an intellectual giant behind Mormonism

46:40

um he was very very quiet I think he was content being a quiet intellectual um by all accounts he was he was very

46:47

bright to get into uh Dartmouth um

46:52

only one in 1500 people in the United States at that time even attended College he was one of them and to get in

Dartmouth & Moor’s academy

47:01

at least in 1823 I think one of the times we have records you had to be

47:06

Converse in an English Latin and Greece uh Greek and translate uh English into

47:12

Latin and vice versa so Hiram Smith who again lived in Dartmouth Hall

47:19

attended church of Christ across the street was a very bright guy
