Joseph King, Decatur, [IL], to Meredith Helm, Springfield, IL, May 17, 1842, Letters pertaining to Freemasonry in Nauvoo , MS 751, Church History Library, 5–7, accessed February 23, 2022
Decatur May 17th 1842
Yours of the 7th Apl came to hand a few days ago from the matter contained in it I presumed it was written on the 7th of May—be that as it may I am pleased to hear that in all probability you will visit us in the 24th of June—In regard to John C Bennett I can say that—at the time I became acquainted with his name (for personally I know him not) his General Character was none of the best. Soon after I was raised to the sublime degree of a master mason Bro Patterson prefer charges against him in Pickaway Lodge, from whence he was expelled—since I received Yours I conversed with Bro. Patterson on the subject—who says it is distinct in his recollection that he preferred charges and that he J.C.B. was expelled—Bro Patterson lived in Bennett neighborhood in Ohio and knows all about his course and conduct there a Letter addressed to him from You would elicit his knowledge of him and perhaps a portion of the charge Preferred—
Very Respectfully Your Friend and Brother
Joseph King
From what King writes, it might be inferred that the letter from Helm was dated April 7 but that King thought it was meant to have been dated May 7.
