The Entered Apprentice Mason Obligation and Oath is an integral part of the initiation ceremony into Freemasonry, and is taken by every new Mason before they can become a full member of the Lodge. This solemn promise outlines the moral and ethical duties that a Mason is expected to uphold during their membership in the fraternity. The Entered Apprentice Mason Obligation and Oath serves as a reminder to all Masons of their commitment to the Craft, and outlines their responsibilities both within and outside of the Lodge.

An Entered Apprentice Mason is the first degree of Freemasonry, and is the first step taken by a man toward becoming a Master Mason. An Entered Apprentice Mason is obligated to keep the secrets of Freemasonry, to perform certain duties, and to conduct himself in a manner worthy of his calling. The Entered Apprentice Mason takes an Obligation, or Oath, that binds him to these duties and responsibilities. This Oath includes pledges of secrecy, obedience, and morality, and is taken in front of other Masons who are present as witnesses. Taking the Obligation is an important step in becoming an Entered Apprentice Mason, but it does not make someone a Mason; only when all of the requirements for joining have been met will the person become a full-fledged member of the Fraternity.
