Prophets in that day [early days of the Church] didn’t qualify it “thus saith the Lord,” they just often spoke personal opinion. And our enemies because of the Latter-day Saint anxiety to share some of these things use that against us. [The] Adam-god theory, blood atonement: those things were even discussed and taught by the prophets, but never accepted as a doctrine of the Church. it was personal opinion to some of these early brethren, and we have to be careful [with it], merely because it appears in a document of the Church.
