John Hulbert Gilbert recalls Oliver Cowdery helping on the printing of the Book of Mormon.
John H. Gilbert, Letter to James T. Cobb, February 10, 1879, rep. Dan Vogel, Early Mormon Documents, 5 vols. (Salt Lake City: Signature Books, 2002), 2:523
I cannot say whether the entire work of “translation” was completed at the time the printing was commenced or not, but think [p. 1] it was. Oliver Cowdery was not engaged as compositor on the work or was not a printer. He was a frequent visitor to the office, and did several times take up a “stick” and set a part of a page—he may have set 10 or 12 pages, all told—he also a few times looked over the manuscript when proof was being read. In one instance he was looking over the manuscript, when the word “travail” occurred twice in the form, but spelling in the manuscript, travel. Mr. Grandin when reading the proof pronounced the word correctly, but Cowdery did not seem to know the difference.
