3. The Board authorized me to make a statement with respect to Negro athletes and our policy on recruitment at BYU. They liked the statement I read but appointed a committeee, consisting of Elder Gordon Hinckley, Elder Thomas Monson and myself, to go over it very carefully. There were some of the Brethren--Elders Benson and Stapley--who thought no statement of any kind should be issued, but about the time their viewpoint was being accepted by the others, President Tanner stepped in and said he thought we could no longer avoid making a statement. That turned the tide.
