I left then about 8:15 and at 9:00 o'clock met with Brother Stapley, telling him of the results of the 2-day meeting [with the Western Athletic Conference university presidents] so that he would be prepared before I went before the Board. He surprised me by saying he thought we ought not to recruit any Negroes at the "Y". I told him the opposite decision had been made at the last meeting of the Board at which he was not present, and I would proceed in that direction. He did not object.
