President Joseph F. Smith blesses Black South African convert William P. Daniels and states that he would someday be able to hold the priesthood.
Evan P. Wright, "William P. Daniels (Chapter XI)," in A History of the South African Mission: Period II, 1903-1944 (n.p.: 1985), 251–259, M276.8 W948h v. 2 1985?, Church History Library
During William P. Daniels' visit in Utah, he had two thrilling personal visits with Church President Joseph F. Smith. President Smith gave Brother Daniels a blessing, wherein he laid his hands on Brother Daniels head and promised him that someday he would hold the priesthood. That was the motivating force in Brother Daniels' life, and hundreds of latter-day missionaries and local members have heard Brother Daniels testify that he received such a blessing and that someday, perhaps in the next life, he would be able to hold the priesthood. With tears running down his cheeks, and dropping off his chin, he has borne that testimony.
On another occasion, and just before departing for South Africa, Brother Daniels met President Joseph F. Smith again. On that occasion he said, "What do you want me to tell them in South Africa?" The prophet answered, "Tell them the truth, Brother Daniels."
The information in the book cited "is from memos and notes made over a period of many years by Evan P. Wright and Daniels family members." Although Wright includes transcripts of some personal documents from Wright in his chapter, no primary source for the account of the blessing of Joseph F. Smith is currently known.
