I have seen an ancient illuminated Greek psalter, in manuscript, which was submitted to Smith's inspection by the late Rev. Mr. Caswalls of the Episcopal Church of the United States, that Smith might tell what it was. Several Mormon officials were present on the occasion. Smith pronounced it to be an "ancient Egyptian book," thereby giving presumptive proof that he knew nothing of the ancient Egyptian language, and had never seen it on plates or on anything else.
