D. Michael Quinn, The Mormon Hierarchy: Extensions of Power (Salt Lake City: Signature Books, 1997), 687–688
... presented hierarchy with plea for vigorous research and response to detailed list of textual “problems” in Book of Mormon 1922; . . . according to diary of his former missionary, BHR stated 7 August 1933 that for more than 10 years he believed Book of Mormon was product of Joseph Smith’s imagination rather than an ancient record divinely translated from gold plates. (Although some have viewed this as consistent with BHR’s detailed analysis of Book of Mormon historicity problems in 1922, this alleged statement conflicted with the rest of BHR’s public and private statements of faith. It is possible that BHR simply described the 1922 study to this former missionary who mistakenly understood that as expressing his mentor’s personal disbelief.)
